Privacy Policy

This is a website that publishes jokes. It does not need to know much about you, and it does not try to.

There is no account to create, no newsletter, no profile, and nothing to fill in before you can read a page. What data does get collected comes from advertising and analytics systems that run on most of the web, and this page explains exactly what those are and how to switch them off.

The Short Version

We do not ask you for your name, your email address, or anything else in order to read this site. We do not sell data. We do not build profiles of readers.

Third-party advertising and analytics services do set cookies and do collect technical information about your visit. That is the bulk of what this page covers, and every one of those systems can be turned off from your own browser or device settings.

Who We Are

This website, pickup-lines.org, is operated from the United States at the address below.

3701 Clay Products Dr

Anchorage, Alaska 99517

United States

Telephone: (907) 677-0769

Email: contact@pickup-lines.org

That is the only address we use for privacy questions or any other correspondence.

Information You Give Us Deliberately

Email

If you write to us, we receive whatever you put in the message. Usually that is a name, an email address, and the text you sent.

It is used to reply to you and for nothing else. We do not add correspondents to mailing lists, we do not use addresses for marketing, and we do not pass them to anybody. Messages are deleted once they have served their purpose.

Submissions

If you send in a line, we keep the submission while we decide whether to publish it. If you ask to be credited, we publish the name or handle you gave us and nothing more. If you ask not to be credited, we publish the line without any reference to you.

Comments

Where a page allows comments, the name and any details you enter are published with your comment, so do not enter anything there you would not want visible publicly. Comment systems may be operated by a third-party provider with its own privacy policy.

Information Collected Automatically

Server and Log Data

Like essentially every website, our hosting records standard request information: IP address, browser type and version, operating system, referring page, the pages requested, and the date and time. This is used for security, diagnosing faults, and understanding broad traffic patterns.

Cookies

A cookie is a small text file stored by your browser. The ones in use here fall into three groups.

Necessary cookies keep the site working, remembering settings such as a theme preference.

Analytics cookies tell us which pages are read and how people arrive, in aggregate.

Advertising cookies are set by ad networks to limit repetition and to measure whether an advert was seen or clicked.

What We Do Not Collect

We do not collect your precise location. We do not use fingerprinting techniques of our own. We do not ask for or store payment information, because nothing on this site costs anything. We do not require registration, so there is no account database.

Third-Party Services

Most of the data collection associated with this site happens inside services we use rather than on our own systems.

Google Analytics

Used to understand which pages are read and roughly where traffic comes from. It collects usage data including IP address, pages visited, and time on page. Reports we see are aggregated, not individual.

You can prevent this entirely with Google’s opt-out browser add-on, available from Google’s own site.

Google AdSense and Advertising Partners

Advertising on this site is served by Google AdSense and may involve other networks. These services use cookies, including Google’s advertising cookie, to serve adverts based on your prior visits to this and other websites.

You can turn off personalised advertising from Google in your Google account’s Ads Settings. Industry-wide opt-outs for many networks at once are available through the Network Advertising Initiative, the Digital Advertising Alliance, and Your Online Choices in Europe.

Embedded Content

Pages may embed content from other platforms, such as a video or a social post. Embedded content behaves as if you had visited that platform directly, and the platform may set its own cookies and collect its own data. Their policies govern that, not ours.

Hosting and Delivery

The site runs on commercial hosting and may use a content delivery network. These providers process request data in order to serve pages and to block abusive traffic.

Your Choices and Rights

Browser Controls

Every major browser lets you block cookies, delete existing ones, or clear site data. Blocking cookies on this site will not stop you reading anything.

Do Not Track

Browsers can send a Do Not Track signal. There is no common standard for honouring it, so we cannot promise how every third-party service responds, and we say so rather than claiming compliance we cannot deliver.

If You Are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom

Under the GDPR you may request access to personal data held about you, ask for correction or deletion, object to processing, request restriction, or ask for data portability. You may also withdraw consent for non-essential cookies at any time through your browser.

Our legal bases are consent for analytics and advertising cookies, and legitimate interests for security, fault diagnosis, and keeping the site running.

If You Are in California

Under the CCPA and CPRA you may request to know what personal information has been collected, request deletion, and opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information. We do not sell personal information. Some advertising cookie activity may be treated as sharing under California law, and you can opt out through the advertising controls described above.

How to Make a Request

Email contact@pickup-lines.org describing what you want. We may need to ask something to establish which data is yours. Requests are answered within the period applicable law allows, which is normally within a month.

Why This Page Is Short on Promises

Privacy policies on sites like this tend to be long, vague, and written to cover every possibility rather than to describe what actually happens. We have tried to go the other way.

We List the Services by Name

Saying “we may share data with trusted partners” tells you nothing. Naming Google Analytics and Google AdSense tells you who to opt out of, which is the only part that helps you.

We Do Not Claim More Control Than We Have

Advertising is served through networks, so we cannot see or vet every individual advert, and we cannot promise what each network does with a cookie. What we can do is name them and point you at the off switch, which is what the sections above are for.

There Is Genuinely Not Much Here

Reading pickup-lines.org requires nothing from you. No sign-up, no email address, no preferences to save. The less a site collects, the less any of this matters, and that is deliberate rather than accidental.

Children

This site is not intended for children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect information from them. Some sections contain humour aimed at adults.

If you are a parent or guardian and believe a child has sent us information, write to us and it will be deleted.

Data Retention

Correspondence is kept for as long as the conversation is active and then deleted. Server logs rotate on the hosting provider’s normal schedule. Analytics data is retained under the retention period configured in Google Analytics. Published submissions remain published unless you ask us to remove them.

Security

We use HTTPS across the site and keep the platform updated. Access to what little data we hold is restricted to the people who run the site.

No system is perfectly secure, and we are not going to claim otherwise. The sensible protection here is the one we have already applied: we do not hold much, so there is not much to lose.

International Transfers

Our hosting and service providers are based in the United States, so if you read this site from elsewhere, technical data about your visit is processed in the United States. Those providers rely on standard contractual clauses and similar mechanisms for transfers out of the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom.

Links to Other Sites

Where we link out, that site’s privacy practices are its own. We cannot vouch for them and we have no control over what they collect.

Changes to This Policy

If this policy changes, the revised version appears on this page with a new date at the top. Significant changes will be noted more prominently.
