About Us

A pickup line is a very small piece of writing with a very specific job. It has to be understood instantly, it has to be funny or charming on the first pass, and it has to survive being said out loud by somebody who is nervous. Almost nothing else in language has to do all three at once.

That is what this site collects.

What This Site Is

This is a library of pickup lines, openers, and one-liners, sorted so you can find the kind you want instead of scrolling through thousands at random.

Cheesy ones. Clean ones. Clever ones. Bad ones that work precisely because they are bad. Lines tied to a hobby, a profession, a holiday, a video game, a particular kind of bar. Lines for people who want to make somebody laugh and lines for people who want to make somebody groan.

The site exists because this material is scattered everywhere and organised almost nowhere. There are endless lists of a hundred lines with no sense of which ones are usable, which ones are decades old, and which ones only make sense if you are standing in a specific place saying them to a specific kind of person.

What This Site Is Not

Not a Dating Service

There are no profiles here, no matching, no messaging between users, and no way to meet anybody through this site. We publish text. What you do with it happens somewhere else entirely.

Not Dating or Relationship Advice

Nothing on pickup-lines.org is advice about your relationship, your situation, or your approach to other people. We are not qualified to give it and we do not pretend to be. If something in your personal life genuinely needs working through, a friend who knows you or a professional who is trained for it will be more use than a website full of jokes.

Not a Method

We do not teach a system, a technique, or a set of steps for getting past somebody’s reluctance. Material like that exists and we have no interest in publishing it. A line is an opener and nothing more.

Not a Guarantee

No line on this site will make anybody like you. Whether an opener lands depends on timing, setting, whether the other person wanted to be approached, and a hundred things no wording controls. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.

How We Think About This Material

The Best Outcome Is a Laugh

Strip away everything else and a good pickup line is a small gift of amusement offered to a stranger. If both people end up smiling, it worked, whether or not anything follows.

That is the standard we apply when deciding what belongs here. Not whether a line sounds impressive, but whether saying it out loud would make the other person’s day slightly better.

Reading the Room Matters More Than the Line

We say this in several places on the site because it is the single most useful thing anyone can know about this subject.

If somebody is working, commuting with headphones in, visibly waiting for a friend, or has already turned away, there is no line that fixes that. The wording was never the obstacle. And when an opener does not land, the correct move is to leave it there with good grace rather than working down the list.

A site like this can either pretend that is not true or say it plainly. We say it plainly.

We Will Not Publish Cruelty

Lines that work by targeting somebody’s race, religion, body, disability, or identity do not appear here. Not in a labelled section, not as a joke about the genre, not at all.

This is not squeamishness. A line that requires the other person to feel diminished is not a pickup line, it is an insult with better timing, and it belongs to a different category of writing entirely.

We Do Not Claim to Own This

Most of this material is folk writing. Lines pass from person to person, change slightly each time, and arrive with no author attached. Nobody owns “do you have a map, I keep getting lost in your eyes,” and we certainly do not.

Where we have written something ourselves, it is ours. Where a line was submitted by somebody who wrote it, it is theirs and we credit them if they want credit. Everything else is common property that we have organised rather than created.

How the Site Is Put Together

Sorted by Situation, Not Just by Count

A list of five hundred lines is less useful than forty lines sorted by where you might actually say them. We group by occasion, interest, tone, and setting, because that is how people search and that is how people use them.

Labelled by Tone

A line that is charming at a party is inappropriate at a work event, and a line that is funny between friends is uncomfortable from a stranger. We label accordingly, and material that needs an adult audience sits in sections that say so.

Written Up, Not Just Listed

Where a category benefits from context, we explain it. Why a certain kind of opener works, where it came from, what tends to go wrong with it. A naked list tells you nothing about which of the five hundred to pick.

Reviewed Rather Than Accumulated

Pages get revisited. Lines that stopped making sense, duplicated each other, or read worse than they did when added get edited or removed. The site is not an archive that only ever grows.

Who Writes This

A small team maintains the site. We write, we edit submissions, and we read the inbox ourselves.

We are not psychologists, dating coaches, or relationship experts, and we are not going to dress ourselves up as any of those. We are people who find this corner of language genuinely entertaining and who think it deserves to be catalogued properly.

Submissions Are Part of It

A good share of what appears here was sent in by readers. If you have a line, a category we are missing, or a correction, the Contact page explains how to send it, and you will get a reply either way.

If You Wrote Something Here

If a line on this site is yours, write to us. We will credit you, link to you, or remove it, whichever you prefer, and you will not be asked to prove anything. This is the request we handle fastest.

How the Site Pays for Itself

This website is free to read and carries advertising. Ad placements are served through third-party networks, which means we do not control every individual advert that appears, though we can and do block categories that do not belong on a site like this.

We refuse advertising that promises guaranteed results with other people, that sells persuasion or manipulation techniques, or that is adult-oriented beyond what fits here. We also refuse paid placement presented as an honest recommendation. If we ever write about a product because somebody paid us to, the page will say so in plain language.

Independence

We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to any dating app, social platform, or company whose name may appear on this site. Where a brand, app, or platform is mentioned, it is for reference only, and all trademarks belong to their respective owners.

Nobody pays for a favourable mention. Nobody has editorial influence over what gets published here.

Who This Site Is For

Somebody who needs a line for a birthday card. Somebody writing a dating profile and stuck for an opener. Somebody who collects terrible puns for their own amusement. Somebody who heard a line years ago, half remembers it, and wants to find the rest of it.

People Using Them Seriously

A fair number of readers genuinely want an icebreaker, and that is a reasonable thing to want. Starting a conversation with a stranger is difficult, and having something prepared takes the edge off.

People Who Just Like Them

Just as many readers never say a single one out loud. Pickup lines are a small, strange literary form with its own conventions, and reading a good one has its own pleasure, independent of ever using it.

People Writing Something Else

Writers, card makers, people putting together a speech or a slide for a work quiz. The collection on pickup-lines.org gets used for all of that, and we keep it browsable with that in mind.

Thank You for Reading

A site that collects jokes is not a serious enterprise, and we are fine with that. But we would rather do it carefully than carelessly, and the people who send in lines, flag mistakes, and tell us when something reads badly are the reason the collection is worth having.

If something here made you laugh, that was the entire point.
